The Health Foundation

The Health Foundation is an independent charity working to improve the quality of healthcare in the UK. We are here to inspire and create the space for people to make lasting improvements to health services.
Working at every level of the system, we aim to develop the technical skills, leadership, capacity and knowledge, and build the will for change, to secure lasting improvements to healthcare.
While we work right across the spectrum of improving the quality of healthcare, we do focus on a number of key priorities. These are the six priorities that lead our work:
When the Health Foundation began the Safer Patients Initiative in 2004, there was a growing awareness of the level of harm in the NHS but no national support to the health service to reduce it. The Safer Patients Initiative was the first major improvement programme addressing patient safety in the UK and aimed to test ways of improving patient safety on an organisation-wide basis within NHS hospitals.
We have developed our work programmes over the last seven years. Our patient safety work is exploring a range of new approaches on a broader set of areas where harm can happen. We are addressing system issues and human factors, for example, through our Safer Patients Network innovation work streams, our work on Safer Clinical Systems and Flow, Safety, Cost and support for the Clinical Human Factors Group.
More widely, the organisation is working to develop the science of improvement and has launched the Improvement Science Fellowship programme and set up the International Improvement Science Network of academics. We are also taking forward a wide range of work through our six priorities including supporting health professionals in improving quality and changing the relationship between people and health services.
Through making healthcare systems and processes more reliable we can reduce avoidable harm. Working with policy makers, healthcare leaders and frontline staff we are building a network of safety-minded people and organisations to test and develop new approaches in patient safety and create an evidence base for safer care.
‘We’re proud to be a strategic partner of the Patient Safety Congress. It is a great opportunity for us to take forward our work with healthcare leaders and frontline staff to build a network of safety minded people and organisations to test and develop new approaches in patient safety and create an evidence base for safer care.’
